Remember me

Seems like Jim isn't the only one who craves Swiss Chalet whenever he comes back to visit family and friends in Toronto.  When Avril Lavigne comes back home, she has to go to Swiss Chalet for some dinner.  Gotta love that about her!  Apparently she goes there for poutine but I wasn't aware that Chalet du Swiss served it.  Something to look in to...

You heard right.  The hunt for the best burger has ended and the reason is...dude!  When you're trying to lose weight, eating burgers ain't the answer.  That was one of the major reasons why there weren't anymore articles 'cause I stopped eating burgers...the other was the fact that I got lazy again and stopped posting about some of the other locations.

Since I last posted (Applebee's) I've gone to some of the other fast food joints (McD's, A&W's), the African Lion Safari burger joint (which was actually really good!) and some other place that I can't remember.

Final diagnosis?  If you're looking for a good burger, avoid the fast food joints, the standard well-known pubs are decent but I woul have to say that the best burgers exist where you least expect it.  I'm talking about those family-owned joints that only locals know about or places you least exect it (African Lion Safari).

What's next for me?  The search for the best salad in town!  Will I keep you posted on it?  Hell no 'cause I'm lazy.

Yes boys and girls, the burger hunt continues!  After that awful experience at Valdrina's I never thought I could eat another burger again but that changed shortly after.  I get a call from a co-worker of mine, Stephy, and I headed east to Ajax to visit her.  Stephy decides she wants to go to Applebee's because they have (in her opinion) the greatest burgers ever.  I was intrigued and I said to myself "the hunt begins...again".

So we head inside and the place is packed!  We find a seat and we waste no time ordering our food.  I decide to go for the Bacon Cheeseburger...complete with burger and fries.  When they brought it out, I was pleasantly surprised at the size (and smell) of the burger.  I munched on some fries first before digging in to the burger.  The fries were actually really good there.  Not the best but very good.  Then came the burger.  I picked it up, took a nice big bite, placed the burger back on my plate and sat back as I chewed away.  My verdict right away was "this is a damn good burger!"  I continued to eat and polished off the food in record time.  I was very pleased with it and thanked Stephy for making an excellent decision as to where to eat.

So I very much enjoyed the Bacon Cheeseburger and would definitely have it again if I ever go to an Applebee's again.  Now what would I rank this burger?  Since I had it after the awful experience that was Valdrina's, it was fantastic but overall and compared to others that I've tried up to that point I would have to give it a 7.5/10.

Valdrina's.  Quite the dining experience.  Will this be the end of this madness called the Burger Hunt?  Read on fellow Burger Hunt followers...you're in for a treat.

First of all, let me start off by saying that Valdrina's used to be Nickel's...the one located at the Eglington/Warden Town Centre.  Ken, J-Mac and I thought it would be nice to try a new place for lunch.  As we entered the restaurant we didn't know what to think of the decor.  It seemed as though they kept a little of the Nickel's look in there and combined it with what looked like fancy dining tables.  I guess they were trying a new (and strange) look.  We accepted it.

Bring on the burgers!  J-Mac and I once again went for the burgers and when the order arrived the presentation was nice.  I must say the fries were good...you can never go wrong with fries (unless you go to Apache Burgers).  The second I bit into that burger, I paused and then slowly began to chew the burger.  The first thing that popped into my head was "what the hell am I eating!?"  It was the oddest, most disgusting burger I've ever tasted.  The burger tasted like it was a cross between a veggie burger & something else.  It was very mushy and melted in your mouth which is just not right.  I don't know why I even finished that burger.  I looked over at J-Mac and he didn't seem to enjoy it either.

In the end, it was the weirdest experience ever.  I should have listened to my sister-in-law when she warned me about the place.  Overall I've got to give this burger a 1.5/10 (the 1.5 being the fries and the bun).  Avoid at all costs.

Burgers at Swiss Chalet?  Who would have thought?  I never realized that Swiss Chalet had burgers until one day about a year ago.  Then several weeks back, Jim, J-Mac and I decided to go there and I was ready to give their burger a try.

It was called the Charbroiled Chalet Burger.  It's a juicy beef burger on a toasted Kaiser with all the toppings you like.  It also comes with a side of fries.  Obviously if you've gone to Chalet then I don't need to tell you how the fries taste...as for me...never been a big fan.  On to the burger.  When that plate came out I was blown away by the size of that sucker.  I wouldn't say it's as big as a Wimpy's burger, but it's pretty damn close.  When I took my first bite I thought it was a great burger!  The description of the burger was completely accurate as well.  After polishing it all off I was sooo full.  But the most important thing...I was satisfied.

In the end, I must say this was a great burger and I would definitely have it again but would I call it the best burger in town?  The Swiss Chalet Charbroiled Chalet Burger gets an 8/10.

It's time to check out some fast food chains to see if they compare to any of the other burger joints I've visited.  The first two fast food restaurants I visited were Wendy's and Harvey's.

Let's start with Wendy's.  Every time I go there there's only one burger I order and that's the Big Bacon Classic and it wasn't different during this visit.  I got the combo with an order of fries and a pop on the side.  I should also note that the one thing that Wendy's does to make their burgers unique is by having their beef patties in the shape of a square.  Sure it's different but does it make the burger taste better?  Definitely not but the burger is still alright.  What makes this combo great is the fries 'cause they do have great fries.

Now on to Harvey's.  This place has always been a favourite of mine and definitely better than the other fast food restaurants.  This time around I decided to order the Angus Burger combo.  With this you get yourself a nice slab of Angus meat that also tastes great.  Another great thing about Harvey's is that you can have your burger any way you want so you get to choose the toppings.  As a side I always go for the onion rings here (the fries aren't the greatest) but even with the rings, they're good but not great and there's just not enough.

After checking out these two places I was pleased with both but Harvey's definitely wins the battle.  I give Wendy's a 6.5/10 for an okay burger and great fries.  Harvey's gets a 7.5/10 for a great burger and good onion rings.
