I had forgotten just how nice our Cabo resort is - when we arrived at the lobby, a smile lit up my face and I was like "oh yeah, now I remember why we bought timeshare here." Our studio unit was not as small and/or difficult as I had thought it would be - by the time Cam crashed, we were pretty tired as well and ended up sleeping shortly after Cam went down, so there weren't any boredom issues with not being to watch tv while Cam slept, etc.
We ended up with a king bed rather than two queens, which opened up a bit more floor space for Cam to run around, but more importantly opened up huge bed acreage for Cam to tumble all over - it was fun with Cam on the king bed. We did have a crib provided by the resort, but Cam only slept half the time in it. My one complaint about our unit was the lack of an eating area - we ended up having our meals while sitting in bed. Cam enjoyed running around the place, and he couldn't get enough of playing in the curtains - he'd go behind them, grab an armful, then run through it, laughing the whole way.
Our first two days were extremely hot and humid, a far cry from the generally cold weather we encountered on our
first visit to Cabo back in February. Our arms would be covered in beads of sweat after just 10 minutes of walking around the resort. Cam easily fell asleep in the heat and after our short walk his hair would be matted with sweat and the back of his shirt would be soaked. Luckily September is storm season in Cabo and by the third day it rained and the heat and humidity broke. We were actually in town when it started to rain so we ducked into restaurant to wait out the storm. It lasted for a short period only, maybe 15 minutes, but boy was there a ton of it dumped on Cabo. Downtown Cabo ended up getting flooded, but it seems like everyone in Cabo drives a pickup or SUV so nobody got stuck. Additionally, all cabs are full-sized vans so they had enough clearance
It actually ended up raining on three out of the seven days of our trip, but it wasn't that bad since the storm cooled everything down. The storm also led to cool clouds and spectacular waves - many resort visitors just sat at the edge of the resort watching the Sea of Cortez pound into the beach.
Once the storms passed, we hit the beach. Cam enjoyed playing in the sand, but he does not like the waves. I walked him into the surf and I thought he would enjoy the water flowing over his little legs, but I guess it was too strong for him and scared him. His first time standing in the surf, he let three waves wash back and forth and then he started to cry and when I lifted him out, he clung onto me with all of his strength. Poor kid. ...and then we stuck him back in the waves again the next day. :) He never did get used to it, which is too bad as the water was a perfect temperature for swimming. Not that I'd take him swimming in the Sea, but I thought it would be nice to play in the surf.
We did take him swimming in the pool, though. We also brought an inflatable raft thingie and Cam loved floating in the big pool as well as running through all the water fountains in the kiddie pool area. Sara brought him to the pool for the first time while I was getting towels, and she said Cam was so excited, he didn't know where to start with all the new stuff to explore and play with.
The edge of the pool is ringed with a metal grate that captures water overflow. Cam was cautious of the metal grate, everytime he walked up to it he would drop down on all fours and then climb over it carefully, careful not to put his weight on the grate. The kiddie pool transitions into the main pool with a series of steps in the water, and I was amazed that Cam was able to recognize the steps under the water. He would run towards the steps, then slow down and then climb down onto the first step with the legs-first backward style that all kids use to climb down stairs. Other families there were also amazed at Cam's walking ability, especially the moms that had kids the same age as Cam that were only crawling. I was so proud of the little guy and I ended up unconsciously boasting about Cam's exploits to some of the other dads. Sara was quick to scold me afterwards. :)
We attended a timeshare presentation at a different resort to take advantage of a free breakfast and get some free activities. One of the activities was a Dolphin Encounter, where we actually got to interact and swim with dolphins! Sara was so excited for Cam and I couldn't wait to take a thousand pictures of the event. Unfortunately they do not allow cameras into the pool area. They end up taking photos for you and you can buy them afterwards. Of course the pictures are crazy expensive but it's a once in a lifetime thing, right? They totally know how to squeeze you. We ended up buying 8 pictures that were put on a CD for us. I cringe at the price even now.... ready? $100. USD. Yes we spent one hundred dollars for EIGHT PICTURES. The photos are awesome, though, and of course it is a once-in-a-lifetime activity, and we got the Dolphin Encounter as a result of our timeshare visit so we didn't pay the up front cost, but still, $100 for 8 pictures. It hurts.
Anyways, back to the Dolphin Encounter itself. They didn't have infant-sized life jackets so we ended up putting a kids life jacket on Cam, which was too big and bulky and ended up pushing into his chin, so he started out uncomfortably. Poor kid, he was crying over the life jacket. Then the dolphins came and I thought he would love them but he was crying even harder at the dolphins. At one point we get to float in the pool and the dolphin comes up and plants a kiss on your cheek. As the dolphin approached Cam and I in the water, Cam started to scream and he was really scared of the dolphin. I was worried the dolphin might freak out over Cam's crying, but nothing changed in the dolphin's behaviour. I suppose it's seen it all before - it's in show business, afterall.
It was a great trip, and it was awesome to see Cam having so much fun. I'm already looking forward to our next trip together!
I've posted
