Joe R. Lansdale's The Drive-In is a 4-issue comic series. Being a huge fan of horror and campy stuff, I thought I'd really enjoy this comic. I did like a lot of the stuff in it but there were some things that were a little twisted and I did not like the way it all ended. Prepare, as I take you on a little trip to The Drive-In, where all your nightmares come true.
So here's a town that has this huge Drive-In with 6 screens running 6 horror movies simultaneously. Friday night is the big night when everyone goes to hang out, fool around and even watch the movie. Enter Jack, Bob, Willard and Randy. Suddenly, a comet flies by the drive-in, having people wondering what had just happened. The comet encloses the entire drive-in in this thick wall that no one can go through or they die. They're trapped.
People try to cope with what had just happened and discuss different theories as well. People begin to scramble for food, others are having group orgies and others are fighting. Willard & Randy decide to take action and eventually take control of the concession stand...fighting off anyone that comes their way. An electrical storm strikes Willard & Randy and they fall into the concession stand. They come out melded into one, people try to shoot them down but to no effect. The Popcorn King is born.
Jack and Bob relax and watch as on one end the Popcorn King is taking care of his people (and eating them) and on the other a group of christians are praying together for everything to be okay. Jack sneaks to see Sam over at the christian side to become one of them but to his surprise, they're just as twisted as the Popcorn King's group. The christians are feeding off of the blood of one another! And they try to give some to Jack. Enter Bob, who blows the arm off of Mable (one of the christians) who was trying to give Jack a little blood.
Bob's had it and gathers the guns from everyone in the christian group. Bob then wants to take down the drive-in tower and crash it into the concession stand (the home of the Popcorn King). They succeed and kill the Popcorn King but it ain't over yet. The groupies are pissed and attack. Suddenly, Jack, Bob, Sam and Mable are nailed to crosses and are about to be torched. The sun suddenly appears, the walls disappear and everyone quietly stops what they're doing, get into their cars and drive home. Jack, Bob and crew get down from the crosses and head home themselves but thinking that there's something else around the corner 'cause there's always a sequel.
So there you have it. There's a lot of stuff that I did like about it such as the writing (where it was the strongest). Some parts though would be a little too weird for the average comic reader. I wasn't really fond of the artwork either. There was a little too much going on (you'll know what I mean if you actually see it for yourself). There wasn't much of an ending. Everything just stopped...no explanation! You would think they would come up with a little twist as to how they fix things. Oh well...they're the writers and I'm not.
So there you go. Overall, I found this to be an interesting little book but even though I liked it, it's not for everyone which is why I give it a 6/10.
