Synopsis: A group of miscellaneous gamblers in a Vegas casino are given a chance to win $2 million in a race from Las Vegas to New Mexico. Comedy ensues.
From Jerry Zucker, the director of Airplane! and Top Secret! and the writer/producer of the Naked Gun trilogy comes Rat Race, another offering from this legendary master. At first, I wasn't expecting much from this film but after watching it...I couldn't stop laughing from start to finish. The film though doesn't have the non-stop slapstick comedy that his other comedies did but laughs were still executed well.
There are a ton of stars in this flick. The movie stars Breckin Meyer, Amy Smart, John Cleese, Cuba Gooding Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Rowan Atkinson, Jon Lovitz, Seth Green, Vince Vieluf and Wayne Knight. Cleese is the man running the race and everyone else are the contestants. As they're all racing to get to New Mexico, Cleese and a whole bunch of other rich people are bidding on who's going to get to the prize first. Everyone in this movie did a good job and the stuff they each go through to reach the money will have you laughing all the way.
Helicopters, cars, trains, buses...their all used to get everyone to the end. Rowan Atkinson hitches a ride with Wayne Knight who is carrying a heart! Jon Lovitz and his family run into a group of Nazi's! Cuba Gooding Jr. drives a bus full of Lucy's! That's just a small taste of what to expect. My favourite group though racing for the cash has to be Seth Green and Vince Vieluf, who play brothers. They had me laughing the most throughout their adventure. I don't want to say what happened to them because it's something that has to be seen if you haven't seen it yet.
The movie looses it's greatness at the end. I think it has one of the lamest endings and they definitely could have done something better. To deliver such a fun ride and then...well, you'll see, is just plain pathetic.
Anyways, this movie does have some great laughs and keeps you entertained all the way through (if you can forgive the ending). This is definitely a movie to watch if you're looking for some good laughs.
Did you know: Jerry Zucker also directed "First Knight" with Sean Connery and Richard Gere and "Ghost" starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore.
